BNA Brewing Expands by Acquiring Crannóg Ales, Makers of the Iconic Backhand of God Stout

In exciting news for craft beer enthusiasts, Kelowna-based BNA Brewing has acquired Crannóg Ales, the revered Sorrento brewery renowned for its legendary Backhand of God stout. This recent development marks an exciting new chapter for Crannóg Ales, as their beloved brews will soon reach more beer lovers across the region, thanks to BNA’s capabilities. The signature Irish ales from Crannóg will continue to be crafted with the same organic ingredients, including hops sourced from Left Fields Organic Farm, ensuring the flavors fans have come to love remain consistent.

Notably, customers can look forward to some changes. BNA Brewing plans to package Crannóg Ales’ flagship beer, the Backhand of God stout, in cans for retail distribution—making it accessible on store shelves for the first time. While Crannóg’s beers were traditionally only available on tap or in growlers at their Sorrento-based location, this move promises wider availability without sacrificing the quality craft brewing for which Crannóg Ales is celebrated.

A Partnership Rooted in Trust

Reflecting on the acquisition, Kyle and Carolyn Nixon, the proprietors of BNA Brewing, expressed both excitement and honor at the opportunity to carry forward the legacy of Crannóg Ales. Not only will Brian MacIsaac and Rebecca Kneen, the original founders of Crannóg, remain involved in operations by cultivating their organic hops and participating in local beer events, but they will also entrust BNA Brewing with the day-to-day operations of their beloved beer.

Kyle fondly recalls his first meeting with Brian and Rebecca, whose generous guidance and hospitality inspired significant elements of BNA’s philosophy. For Kyle, continuing to brew Backhand of God, a beer with a devout following, is a dream come true. BNA Brewing has already begun producing Crannóg’s beer at their Kelowna facility, and Carolyn is confident that they will effectively meet the high demand for Crannóg’s offerings.

Preserving a Legendary Craft Beer Legacy

With a heritage spanning 25 years, Crannóg Ales has long been a staple in the craft brewing community with a range of standout Irish-style beers, highlighted by the acclaimed Backhand of God stout. As BNA Brewing takes the reins, they are committed to maintaining and extending Crannóg Ales’ legendary legacy for future generations of beer enthusiasts.

The Nixons, through their hospitality group, have shown their dedication to the culinary and craft beer scene in Kelowna and beyond. From launching BNA Brewing in 2015 to acquiring other beloved local establishments, their efforts consistently contribute to the growth of the local craft beer community.
